Meditation at the Lagoon

las lagunas

Today’s meeting, Aviva and a couple of girls, headed down to Las Lagunas in Nogales for meditation at the lagoon.

Stress has become such a huge part of our daily lives, that taking the time to process our experiences in a safe environment can be life changing.

To bring more depth to our experience today, we began reading stories from Women Who Run with the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

Within every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. But she is an endangered species. In Women Who Run With the Wolves, Dr. Estés unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, and stories, many from her own family, in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, visionary attributes of this instinctual nature. Through the stories and commentaries in this remarkable book, we retrieve, examine, love, and understand the Wild Woman and hold her against our deep psyches as one who is both magic and medicine. Dr. Estés has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul.

We continue meeting once to twice weekly focusing on stress relief and living vibrantly.  Thanks to all who support the cause!

Raw Food Delivery and Newspaper Article!

I’m super excited to announce that at today’s WELCOME BACK TO THE GREENHOUSE meeting, we had a VERY special experience.

Our team was given the opportunity to work in a live commercial home-kitchen and participate the in the making of 35 meals to be freshly delivered tomorrow morning. GREEN START is a new local Nogales-based business that caters raw food to Hermosillo, Mexico all the way to Tucson and Sierra Vista, Arizona. With the girls fully prepped with basic knife skills training from Elaina Love’s PURE JOY CULINARY ACADEMY, Candy and Renee were set to go.

While the girls worked beautifully under the supervision of lead chef CARLA ROMERO, a local reporter named Joe came to experience the event and write on what THE GREEN HOUSE is doing.

He was so moved by the experience, he even signed up for the Raw Food Challenge GREEN START serves, and he’s excited to get healthy again!

We’re very much looking forward to sharing the article….

More soon!

Congratulations CANDY!

Juice Cart UPDATE!

painting day 1

We can hardly believe that the time has finally come!  We are now preparing to open up The Green House Juice & Smoothie Hut, so we have lots of work to do!  And with Fresh Fest just around the corner, we have NO TIME TO WASTE!

Not sure how it was all going to come together, Yosef and I literally had 2 hours to manifest everything we needed.  After all, the teens are on Fall break – and I told them we’d be painting!  So yesterday, after a few months of off and on correspondence – I went down to NOGALES PAINT & SUPPLY and told them our whole shpeel – and they were sold!  After the QUICK approval from corporate, we received a gracious donation3 gallons of charmed green & 3 gallons of white.  We really are so grateful for you guys!! Thank you so much for your support.  First round of juices on us! ;)

Strapped for cash, and determined for more support, I ran into Home Depot’s back office – reminded them they were already signed up to help us at Fresh Fest – I told them what I needed and BANG! They were able to pitch in a $25 gift card to cover the (most) of the bill – brushes, accessories.  What a RELIEF!

So, after day one, we were all pretty excited!  Many more coats to go….but we are on our way!

More to come….so stay tuned!

Love,

The Green Team

Can Eating Fruits and Veggies Outwit Bad Heart Genes?

fridge veg by Martin Poole EDITED

As found in

We know that eating lots of fruits and vegetables is good for the heart, but can a healthy diet really overcome the effect of genes that boost your risk for heart problems?

Yes, it can, according to researchers in Canada who studied data on more than 27,000 people to figure out which contributes more to the risk of heart disease: environment or genes. The researchers focused on a group of people with specific genetic variants that are known to increase the risk of heart disease. They found that people who had the variants but ate lots raw fruits and vegetable showed no increased heart risk, compared with those who had a less healthy diet, who were twice as likely to have a heart attack.

“We found that among those with the high-risk genotype, if they consumed a diet high in vegetables and fruits, their risk for heart attack did not increase despite their having the high-risk gene profile,” says Dr. Sonia Anand, a professor of medicine at epidemiology at McMaster University and one of the co-authors of the study published in PLoS Medicine.

The scientists relied on two large sets of data, one that involved more than 8,100 people in 52 different countries, comparing those who had had heart attacks with similar people who had not, and another set from Finland including more than 19,000 participants who were surveyed every five years for heart-related deaths, heart attacks, angina, stroke or bypass and angioplasty procedures. Both groups also answered detailed questionnaires about what they ate.

The research team divided the enrollees in the first study into three diet groups based on their answers on 19 food-related questions. People were classified as eating primarily “western,” “oriental,” or “prudent” diets. Western diets included eggs, meats, fried and salty food, sugar and desserts; the oriental diet included more tofu, pickled foods, green leafy vegetables, soy sauce and less sugar. Finally, the prudent diet eaters followed what most of us would recognize as a heart-healthy menu: raw vegetables, fruits, nuts and some dairy products. Participants in the larger Finnish study were also placed in the prudent group, based on their intake of fruits, vegetables and berries.

The scientists further separated the participants within the various dietary groups by their genetic profiles. Specifically, the authors looked for four variants on a region of DNA on chromosome 9 that is known to boost heart attack risk by up to 20% in carriers, compared with those without the variants. People in the current study who had the high-risk genes — in this case, two versions of them, one from their mother and one from their father — were two times more likely to have a heart attack if their diet was lacking in fruits and veggies, compared with the “prudent” eaters.

That suggests that diet can make a real difference in heart disease risk, even when that risk is genetically based. “It means that perhaps our family history, or genetic risk, is modifiable,” says Anand. “Despite not being able to change our genetics, if we are able to modify the effect or expression of our genes. That’s exciting.”

The scientists were encouraged to study this effect after animal studies showed that heart muscle in mice bred without the high-risk genes had different responses to different diets. That served as hint that perhaps what we eat could alter the way the heart functions. How that happens isn’t clear yet, but it’s possible that eating lots of fruits and vegetables somehow change the way the genes in this region make their proteins or enzymes, prompting them to produce factors that may counteract the effects of heart risk factors like atherosclerosis.

However it works, the fact that something within our control can combat the effects of disease-causing genes should be good news, especially for those of us who try valiantly to resist meats and processed foods and to stick with a more raw foods-focused diet. So, when it comes to heart health, it looks like Mother knew best: Eat your vegetables.

Why We Do What We Do

ChildhoodObesity2

Sometimes, we forget to tell people WHY we do what we do here at The Green House.  The truth is, is that our health in this country is the WORST is has EVER been in all our history.  In fact, it is reported that this generation might be the first to live SHORTER than their parents.

Jamie Oliver, in the video below, has been revolutionizing food in public schools.  He is an incredible inspiration!

Obesity rates among all children in the United States

(Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)

[Read article]

  • Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese.
  • Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled.
  • There are significant racial and ethnic disparities in obesity prevalence among U.S. children and adolescents. In 2007—2008, Hispanic boys, aged 2 to 19 years, were significantly more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white boys, and non-Hispanic black girls were significantly more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white girls.

Obesity rates among low-income preschool children

(Data from the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System)

  • 1 of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese. [Check out this Fact Sheet to learn more (PDF-1.5Mb)]
  • County obesity rates are variable within states. Even states with the lowest prevalence of obesity have counties where many low-income children are obese and at risk for chronic disease.

Childhood obesity is also an increasing concern for the WHO:

“The problem [of childhood obesity] is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings.… Globally, in 2010 the number of overweight children under the age of five, is estimated to be over 42 million. Close to 35 million of these are living in developing countries.

Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age.” - — Childhood overweight and obesity, WHO, last accessed August 22, 2010

With obesity comes increasing risks of

  • Cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke) — already the world’s number one cause of death, killing 17 million people each year.
  • Diabetes (type 2) — which has rapidly become a global epidemic.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders — especially osteoarthritis.
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).

In addition, childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature death and disability in adulthood.

Low-Income Children Aged 2 to 4 Years

So, what is the answer to all of this?

PREVENTION EDUCATION!

Learning how to get a healthy dose of fruits & veggies daily – plus quality exercise will help prevent these issues.  The Green House is committed to making these resources available.
